When a mammoth rushes towards you, you long for an evasive step. Then all you have to do is complete all the main tasks of the residents of your village, see a short final sequence and the credits roll across the screen. In addition, you bring some characters and residents into your village, which is growing bit by bit. Your real goal is only to defeat these two tribes by conquering their fortresses and killing the respective leader. That actually provides enough scope for an exciting story, but somehow Far Cry Primal shuffles from one mission to the next rather clumsily. You escape, meet another Wenja woman (your tribe) in a cave on the way and decide with her to rebuild the tribe in the land of Oros, where two competing tribes make life difficult for the Wenja. However, at the height of success, your group gets mixed up by a saber-toothed tiger and you just barely get away with your life. And that’s a shame, because the game actually starts excitingly by throwing you into the middle of a mammoth hunt. Unfortunately, not nearly as much love has gone into the story, which is mostly uninspired and almost non-existent. The world looks like one piece and you never have the feeling that something would not fit here. From the snowy north to barren, steppe-like sections to the lush green and wooded south, there is a lot of visual variety on offer. And Ubisoft’s designers have done a really great job on world design. It’s just the right size for this game – not too huge that you could get lost in it and be overwhelmed by trivial tasks, but also not so small that you feel restricted and have nothing to do. One aspect that I really like about Far Cry Primal is the manageable size of the game world. You would get more experience points with which you can improve your skills, but even with the normal yield, which you mainly earn from your main tasks, you can make ends meet.Įven the more dangerous animals are relatively easy to tame, but are very useful companions. Otherwise, there is no major disadvantage if you don’t do all the side stuff. You don’t have to do a lot of it, but you will especially devote yourself to the beacons and outposts so that you don’t always have to walk so long. In this respect, Primal does not differ significantly. In other words: You have your main missions that you have to fulfill in order to advance in the “story” (more on that in a moment), on the other hand a few additional side tasks, you can use beacons and conquer outposts to unlock new destinations for fast travel, and you’ll come across one or the other mission along the way. Because you quickly notice that, despite everything, little has changed in the usual gameplay that you know from other Ubisoft games such as their predecessors, Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs.īehind everything stands the meanwhile well-known “Ubisoft formula”.
In some moments it is really awesome, but unfortunately many elements often seem more uninspired than one had hoped in advance, given the rather unusual scenario. I haven’t had such mixed feelings about any shooter in the last few years as I did with Ubisoft’s Far Cry Primal. You die and it's game over.Far Cry Primal convinces with its successful implementation of the Stone Age world, but relies too much on the old, stuck formulas.
